I wish we could make a little experiment and take what people on this site are saying to somewhere online in no later than 2000.
You'd be amazed at how how much milder and more constructive the reactions would have been.
Now imagine we could take it to 2024. I assure you that most posts would no longer even be diagnosing or insults. They would be explicit death threats.
I agree that things are degenerating quickly. As I mentioned here, I saw a dramatic change in the response to the same content that I posted to the American Mensa forum in 2007 and 2011. As for the future, the future is always unpredictable. By 2024, Americans may be so poor that all they care about is getting enough to eat, and in that case they won't be so concerned about ideology.
